Don't You Forget About Me

Class of 1984.
Watertown High School, Watertown, South Dakota.
57201.
Dear Mr. Principal...we accept
the fact that we had to sacrifice a
whole weekend in detention for
whatever it was that we did wrong ...
what we did was wrong.
But we think you're crazy to make us write this
essay telling you who we think we
are, what do you care? You see us
as you want to see us...in the
simplest terms and the most
convenient definitions. You see us
as a brain, an athlete, a basket
case, a princess and a criminal.
Correct? That's the way we saw each
other at seven o'clock last Thursday morning.
We were brainwashed...

But what we found out, after a couple of
sultry September days twenty five years
later, is that each one of us

is a brain...

...and an athlete...

...and a basket case...

...a princess...

...and a criminal...

Does that answer your question?
Sincerely yours, the Breakfast Club.

The Breakfast Club remains one of my all-time favorite films! It was my pleasure to borrow the letter my favorite characters wrote to Mr.Vernon (...you mess with the bull, you get the horns...) twenty five years ago!
My 25th High School Reunion was even more fun than I had imagined ... and I had imagined it was going to be extremely fun!! With time, we all seemed to realize without saying the words, that it didn't matter who had lost or gained the most hair or weight. How much money or publicity we have or haven't made. Who was most popular or wise when we were children. What mattered is that we enjoyed each others company! We laughed until it hurt! Each one of us is all those things we dreamed of being when we were "young" and each one of us better than ever! Thank you to my class, for a wonderful weekend and the prospect of many more to come!
(FYI - I always felt most connected to Ally Sheedy's character!)

I was surprised that so many of you can dance like Emilio Estevez.

Next time we start the weekend out watching the Breakfast Club! I had probably one of the most fun weekends in Watertown! Great memories made, old friendships new again!
